The United States Congress
The United States Congress is a legislature body of the US federal government. As in our country it consists of two chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives has 435 voting members serving for two-years term. The number of seats to each federal state correspond with the number of inhabitants of each state. In the Senate there are two Senators from each state, 100 together. They are elected for six years and every two years a third of Senators is changed. The chairman in Senate is Vicepresident and he can vote only in case of vote equality. Both Senators and Representatives are elected directly.
The residence of Congress is Capitol in Washington D.C., the north wing is the Senate chamber and the south wing is the House of Representatives chamber.
When the Congress was setting up there were some proposals how it should look like. James Madison form Virginia called for a bicameral Congress, the lower house elected directly by the people and upper house elected by lower house. Smaller states favoured unicameral Congress with equal representation of all federal states. A compromise was chosen and it lasts still now.
The primary object of US Congress is law making, but there are other important function of Congress. Congress may regulate interstate and foreign trade, collect taxes, organize the federal courts, coin money, establish post office, maintain the military, declare war and many others. Both chambers are equal but there are some differences e.g. appointing federal judges by President or international treaties requires
