1. What is Wi–Fi

Wi-Fi is a brand of technology of the wireless local area networks (WLAN). Because the „Wi – Fi“ acronym is quite similar to another well-known one, Hi – Fi, which means „High Fidelity“, many people think that it stands for „Wireless Fidelity“, but it doesn’t (you can see details in the article at the end of presentation). It was, together with the Wi – Fi logo, created by the Interbrand Corporation at the request of the founding members of the Wi – Fi Alliance. Wi – Fi Alliance is the trade organization that defines the Wi-Fi standards and takes care of a compatibility between products from different vendors – they created the branding Wi-Fi CERTIFIED which guarantees customers that such devices are interoperable with other products with this brand.

2. What is Wi–Fi good for

Wi-Fi was originally developed to be used for mobile computing devices, such as laptops, but is now increasingly used for more services, including Internet, gaming, and basic connectivity of consumer electronics such as televisions and DVD players. It’s based on the IEEE 802.11 specification (we will talk about it later), but there are more standards in development that will allow Wi – Fi to be used for example by cars on highways, as a part of so called Intelligent Transportation System, which will provide better safety or collecting statistics.

A person with a Wi–Fi enabled device (computer, PDA or telephone) can connect to the internet when he is near an access point. An access point is a device that connects wireless communication devices together to form a wireless network. A place covered with one or more access points and offering a wireless access is called a hotspot. Hotspots are often found at restaurants, train stations, airports, libraries, coffee shops, bookstores, and other public places. Many universities and schools have wireless networks on their campus.

Wi-Fi also allows connectivity in peer-to-peer mode (without access point) which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connectivity mode is useful in consumer elctronics and gaming applications.

3. How does it work

In a wireless network, the network adapters in each computer convert digital data to radio signals, which they transmit to other devices on the network, and they convert incoming radio signals from other network elements back to digital data. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering) has produced a set of standards and specifications for wireless networks under the title of IEEE 802.11 that defines
