CANADA
Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. Its capital is Ottawa. Total area of land is about 10 mil. km2 and has a population of only 33 million people. Canada has borders with the USA in the south and Alaska in the northwest. Canada is washed with the Artic Ocean in the north, on the Pacific Ocean in the west, on the Atlantic Ocean in the east. Canada´s neighbour across the Artic Ocean is Russia. It is a bilingual country. English and French are official languages.
Most of the population live in cities along the Canada-US border.
Weather: Canada is one of the coldest countries in the world. The climate is varied. Canada has mostly a continental climate with warm and sunny summers and long cold winters. On the Pacific coast the climate is milder. The North has the Artic climate.
Countryside: There are some 2 million lakes in Canada. It shares four of the Great Lakes with the USA: Lake Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario. Other lakes Great Slave Lake and Winnipeg. The largest lake in Canada is the Great Bear Lake.
The longest river is the Mackenzie flows from the Rocky Mountains to the Artic Ocean. The St Lawrence is Canada´s most important river which flows to the Atlantic Ocean.
Other rivers: the Yokon, the Fraser, the Columbia, the Nelson. Niagara Falls lies on the border with the USA, and the Canadian part is called Horseshoe Falls.
Thare are lots of mountain renfes: Torngats, Appalachians and Laurentians in the ears. There are Rocky Mountains, the Coastal and Mackenzie Mountains and the Melville Hils in the west. The highest peak is Mt. Logan (6000m) in the Yokon. Canada has 38 national parks. The oldest park is Banff, The Tukut Nogait park. The Great Plains cover three of Canada´s Westerns Provinces.
Tipical Canadian animals include: seals, whales, fox, bison, prairie dogs, beaver, rattle snakes, moose, cougars, musk oxen, bears.
History: The original inhabitants come from Asia. The first Europeans were the Vikings. The name Canada comes from the Indian word Kanata which means village.
