Dear Mr Smith

I am writing in response to your advertisement for crew members in The Times. I would like to apply
for the post, and enclose a copy of my CV for your attention.

I believe that my personal qualities and experience make me a suitable candidate for this post. As you
can see from my CV, I have three years’ experience of working on charity projects in developing
countries. On these projects, I worked with people from different backgrounds, both independently and
as a part of a team. I learned to carry out my responsibilities but also to look after the needs of others
in the team.

I do not have very much sailing experience, but I am willing to learn. I am highly motivated, hard-
working and very well organized. These are all qualities which enabled me to succeed in my charity
work. I am sure they will make me a key member of your crew.

Dear Ms Summers

I am writing to apply to your advertisement for sales people in “Strike Out” magazine.

I am fully qualified primary school teacher with eight years’ experience. Six years ago, I gave up my
teaching post to become a full-time mother and housewife. Now that my children are both in full-time
education, I am keen to return to the job market.

I am very excited by this opportunity, as it will give me the chance to work with teaching professionals,
as well as allowing me to fit my career, around the needs of my family. I have a very wide network of
friends and former colleagues and am active in the community. I am confident that these would all be
highly useful contacts. I have enjoyed using your materials with my children and I feel I could
communicate their advantages to other parents and teachers.
