The Commonwealth evolved from the British Empire into a free and loose association of independent and sovereign nations. It is an economic and primarily an intergovernmental organization without a formal charter or struction. It is an association of independent states. It has got 50 members of which 46 are located in the developing world (27 member states are small entities with populations of less than 1 million.
1931 – The Statute of Westminster confirmed the virtually full sovereignty of the „white“ dominions. (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Irish Republic and Newfoundland)
1949 – An agreement was reached that allowed newly independent India and thus other members to be a presidental republic but still a Commonwealth member recognizing the Crown as the symbol of a certain togetherness.
(In the same year Ireland left the Commonwealth and Newfoundland became a province of Canada).
1965 – A Commonwealth secretariat was established to coordinate activities mainly through personal diplomacy and multilateral consultation.
Symbolic head
They have got president but they recognize a queen as their symbol. The queen is represented by a Governor General who can only act on the advice of the national government.
Formal head
They havve got president and he can decide about everything in the state and they haven´t got queen.
CANADA
Geography
Canada occupies the whole of the northern part of North America. Except Alaska because it is part of the USA. Canada occupies many islands (e. g. Baffin Island, Newfoundland, Vancouver, Prince Edward Island, etc…) Canada´s area is 9 976 139 square kilometres – it is the second largest country in the world.
It neighbours with the USA – with Alaska and with the continental states on the 49th parallel and the Great Lakes Area. The Great Lakes Area is the largest area of fresh water in the world. There are famous Niagara Falls between Lake Erie and Ontario. We can find also other big and beautiful lakes in Canada, e. g. Great Bear Lake, Great Slave Lake, Lake Winnipeg, etc.
Canada has large mountain areas – The Rocky Mountains, the Mackenzie Mountains and the Melville Hills. The highest mountain is Mt. Logan in the Alaska Region (6 050m). The longest river is the Mackenzie
