The capital city is Wellington and currency is New Zealand Dollar. The population is about 4 million and area is about 270 000 sq km. The density is 15 people per sq km.The flag of New Zealand consists of the British Union Jack in the left upper corner and four red stars in the constellation of the Southern Cross.GEOGRAPHY:RELIEF:The country is mountainous; there is very little flat land. The North Island is famous for its hot springs, geysers and watering places. The thermal activity of the volcanic area is very spectacular. The South Islands has fertile plains and high mountains, the Southern Alps. There are glaciers and fiords in the west. The highest peak is Mount Cook 3764 m. The Southern Alps provides excellent opportunities for skiing and mountaineering.RIVERS AND LAKES:Many of the rivers are short. NZ has many lakes, the largest of which Lake Tanpo is also in the North Island.CLIMATE:NZ has a very pleasant, healthy temperature climate with plenty of sunshine with warm summers and mild winters.ISLAND:The main islands, the North (111,000 sq. km) and the South (151,000 sq. km) are separated by narrow Cook Strait. Stewart Island, south of the South Island, and many small islands, both populated and unpopulated, lie around the coast. The four main cities (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin) are even spaced down the length of the country. Each has a good port and is an industrial centre.People:About 4 million people live in New Zealand. Some of them call themselves kiwis. Most of them have European ancestors. The indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori, have a population of about 600,000 people. The North Island is smaller than the South Island, but most people (more than 3 million) live there.
