This term is used for the countries, where the majority of the population speaks English as their mother language. They are Great Britain, Ireland, The USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zeeland. Besides these countries there are a large areas, where English is spoken a second language, e.g. India and a lot of African countries (JAR).
Commonwealth is voluntary association of Britain and it’s 47 former colonies.
English is the most widespread language in this world. It’s used not only as a native language but also for practical purposes, e.g. for business, educations, sports, technology.
GREAT BRITAIN
Geography: The UK (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) lies between the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The UK consists of two large islands (GB and partly Ireland) and about 5000 smaller ones (e.g. the Shetlands, the Hebrides etc.) The highest mountains in Britain are The Highlands of Scotland (with the highest mountain Ben Nevis 1342 m). The longest rivers are the Severn (354 km) and the Thames (336 km).
People: The population is more than 58 million people (in 1993). The density is one of the highest in the world – 232 people to 1 sq km. In Britain we can find the following ethnic groups: English (81%), Scottish (9,6%), Irish (2,4%), Welsh (1,9%), Ulster (1,8%), Indian, Pakistan and others. The majority of people speak English. There are minority languages – Welsh, Scottish and Irish Gaelic.
National economy: The main industries are steel, metals, vehicles, shipbuilding, banking, textiles, chemicals, electronics, and machinery. GB has the richest coal deposits in the world. Hence is the saying: “It’s like carrying coal to Newcastle”. Britain’s natural riches are tin, oil, earth gas, limestone, iron, chalk and lead. Agriculture is mostly concentrated on its cattle and sheep breeding. Although grains, sugar beet, potatoes, vegetables and fruit are grown in GB too (e.g. Kent is a garden of England), 50% of these products must be imported. Only 1,5% of lab
