The US are so large that there are 4 time zones. The longest river is called the Mississippi. Among (mezi) other rivers: the Missouri, the Ohio, St. Lawrence, the Colorado. The Great Lakes are situated on the border with Canada. There are 5 of them altogether, one of them: Lake Michigan.
In the north the climate is mild, the southern part lies in the subtropical zone. Florida, the Gulf of Mexiko and the Hawaii are located in the tropical zone. Alaska lies in the artic zone.
Alaska is the largest American state.
The national flag consists of two oblongs (obdelníky). It is a smaller blue oblong with 50 white stars (=50 states) and one larger oblong consisting of white 6 and 7 red stripes symbolizing the original 13 colonies. It is called Old Glory or Stars and Stripes. The national anthem is called The Star-Spangled Banner (hvězdami posestá vlajka)
The US has one of the strongest economy in the world. The US is a leading country in agriculture, in the chemical, machinery (strojírenský) industries and cars and in minerals and raw materials (nerostných surovin).
Agriculture: the quality of soil (země) in North America is excellent. The US produce the majority of the world´s corn, soybeans, tomatoes, oranges, apples and tobacco.
Mineral resources: deposits (naleziště) of gold, silver, platinum and petroleum (ropa).

-The USA is a democratic republic, a federation of 50 states.
-The head person there is the president. His name is Barrack Obama.
-There are about 50 states in USA + HYPERLINK "http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia" \o "District of Columbia" District of Columbia. Each country has its own governor.
-In each modern state, there are 3 branches of power:
A.) Legislative (zákonodárná) – creates bills. The body of the Legislative power is The Congress. This means two houses: the Senate (100 Members) and the House of Representatives (435 Members)
B.) Executive (výkonná) – the President and Executive Office. It approves (schvaluje) laws and sees if laws are followed. The President represents the executive power. There are two main parties in the USA – Democrats and Republicans. People have to be registered in one of the group and choose between their candidates. US citizens must be 18 to be able to vote.
C.) Judicial (soudní) – settles arguments about the meaning of the law. In the Judicial branch the Supreme Court has the highest power with a seat in Washington D.C.
The president is elected for four years and may be only elected twice.
Population
-It has about 300 million inhabitants. About 80% of people live in towns and cities, especially in the North of the country
- The country is the 3rd most populated in the world after China and India..
The American population is very diverse. It is a land of emigrants. The USA are sometimes called the Salad Bowl or the Melting Pot (tavící hrnec).
-Official language is English. Because of the large number of immigrants, many other languages are spoken there. Most religious people are protestant (about 60%) and Catholic (about 21%).

The Grand Canyon is one of the best known places of interest of the USA. It is also one of the most favourite places to visit.

The Mount Rushmore
The Mount Rushmore is another famous place of interest. It is a mountain with the natural statues of four American presidents.
