GEOGRAPHY
The United States of Ameica lay on the North hemisphere. It extend area about 9 500 000 sq
km, and stretches from the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the American Pacific island on the west.
Bordered on the north by Canada and on the south by Mexico, it is a vast nation on a vast
continent.
The continental USA has two mountain ranges parallel with the Atlantic and Pacific oceans:
the Appalachians in the east and the higher Rocky Mountines in the west.
Between the two are vast central lowlands - plateaux, drained by the Mississippi and its
tributaries, and including the prairies of the Mid West.
In the north on the Canadian border, are the Great Lakes - the main lakes in the USA. Lake
Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The Niagara takes the water
of Lake Erie into lake Ontario forming the Niagara Falls.
Many rivers cross the country. The most importatnt are the Mississippi, Missouri, Rio
Grande flowing into the Gulf of Mexico; the Potomac, Hudson, Savannah flowing into the
Atlantic Ocean; the Colorado, Sacramento and Columbia flowing into the Pacific Ocean; and
the Yucon, in Alasca, flowing into the Bering Sea.
There are great differences between - and within - the main regions, with desert in the south-
west, forests in the north, and large swamps in the south-east.
CLIMATE
The climate varies enormously too. Florida is tropical, but Nort Dakota in winter is often
colder than the Arctic. It is generally drier in the west, and on both coasts the influence of the
ocean moderates summer heat and winter cold.
