Location:
The United States of America is composed of 50 states which are situated in the northern part of the American continent.
They stretch from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and border on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south. Alaska, the 49th state, occupies the north-western end of North America. Hawaii, the 50th state, is situated in the Pacific Ocean.
The total area of the USA is over 9, 6 mil sq km.
The surface is extremely varied. Level lands called plains are found in many parts of the country e.g. the Mississippi Plain along the river Mississippi, the Florida Plain at Florida and the Atlantic Plain along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The Great Plains (sometimes called the „breadbasket“of the USA, because of the great harvests from the rich farmlands) are in the interior of the country. High, flat lands, usually found between the mountains, are called plateaux.
There are many mountains especially in the west and south-west e.g.
The Rocky Mountains, which form eastern – most range of the Cordillera Mountains.
The Appalachian Mountains are in the eastern part of the USA.
The highest peak is situated in the Alaska Range and it is Mount McKinley (over 6000 m).
The lowest point is Death Valley (-86m)
Rivers:
The most important are the Mississippi (called the „Old Man River“), the Missouri and Rio Grande flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. The Potomac or the Hudson flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The Colorado and Columbia flow into the Pacific Ocean and the Yukon in Alaska flows into the Bering Sea.
Lakes:
In the USA there are also several hundreds of lakes. The largest of them – the Great Lakes (Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario) lay between the USA and Canada. The Niagara takes the water of Lake Erie into Lake Ontario forming the Niagara Falls (the American part of the falls is almost 55m high and 320 m wide). In the Cordillera Mountains the largest lake is Great Salt Lake.
Climate:
The climate is varied – from the arctic climate in the north to the subtropical climate in the south. There are wide variations of regional climate. Alaska lies in the arctic zone. Hawaii lies in the tropical zone and its climate is oceanic.
