Government type and administration:
The U.S.A. with the Presidenst as the head of the state is a federation of 50 states. There is one district, D.C. – District of Columbia – it means the land of Columbus. The capitol is Washington D.C. Other big cities are: New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Houston…
The capital of the U.S. is Washington D.C.. This is the first city in the world that was especially planned and buil as the capital and centre of the government. In the city along the Potomac River, there are the most important buildings in the U.S.A. – the White House, The Capitol (seat of the Congress), the Pentagon (the centre of military forces) … no factories, indurstry, skyscrapers here. There are many monumentrs to commemerate the outstanding /vynikající, nedokounčený/ U.S. presidents (e.g. Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson). In the Library of Congress we can find the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
Flag:
The American Flag consists of two part – the Flag has 13 red and white stripes which symbolizing the original 13 British colonies and on the blue field in the top corner there are 50 stars. Each star represents one of the 50 states of the U.S. The flag is often called the Stars and Stripes.
History:
The american continent was discovered first by Icelandic Vikings, another was an Italian mariner Christopher Columbus in 1492. The first English colony was founded in Virginia in 16th century. In 1620 came the first permanent settlers – they were called Pilgrim Fathers and they were persecuted /pronásledováni, vyhnáni/ from England. The first winter was terrible for them and half of them died, but with helping of the Indians the next year was better and they had got a very good harvest. They celebrated it in October 1621 and held a feast with much food. They called this day Thenksgiving day – it is typical family festival (eat turkey, all family is together, very important day.
In 17th century came second wave of emigrants from all Europe here. The people wanted the gold and find a new occasion /příležitost/.
In 1773 a group of patriots, dressed as Indians, threw a cargo of British tea into the Boston Harbor. This event is known as the Boston Tea Party.
On July 4th, 1776 was written the Declaration of Independence mainly by Thomas Jefferson that defended /bránit, obhajovat/ the American revolution against the British king George III and explained that all men are created equal and have a natural righ
