It is composed of 50 states joined in a republic. The continental United States (i.e. the block of 48 states extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific( border on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south. Alaska, which became the 49th state in 1959, occupies the north-western end of the North American continent, the distance from the U.S. being approx. 500 miles. It is separated from Russia by about 50 miles of the Bering Strait. Hawaii, which became the 50th state in the same year, is situated approximately mid-way between America and the Asian continent.

The seat of the Federal Government is in the city of Washington, located in the District of Columbia (D.C.) which is not a state.
Each of the 50 states is theoretically sovereign, having its own state government and constitution, and is joined to the others by a federal government.
Relief
The following landforms are present in the landscape of the United States: level lands called plains, high, flat lands, usually found between mountains, are called plateaux, and there are also many mountains (especially in the west and south-west) and hills.
Starting from the east there are Coastal Plains along the Atlantic Ocean, the Appalachian Mountains (geologically the oldest ones whith the highest peak Mt.Mitchell 2,037m), further to the west there is the Mississippi Basin called the Interior Plains which comprises the Mississippi Lowlands, Central Plains and Great Plains. Then there is a large mountain area consisting of the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Mountain System, i.e. the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada (with the highest peak of the continental U.S.A., Mt.Whitney (4,418m).
