Prague is the capital and the largest city of the Czech Republic. It has over 1 million inhabitants. Prague is situated on the river Vltava in central Bohemia. It has been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1100years. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, that’s why it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.
Prague was founded in the 8th century. According to the legend about foundation of the city, it was founded by princess and prophetess Libuše. She has ordered to built a city where a man
carved a treshold (vyřezávat práh) of his house. From the word treshold, in czech „práh“, has originated the name of the city Prague.
In the 14th century during the reign of the king Charles IV the city was experiencing the biggest development. He ordered to build the New Town and the Charles Bridge. He has also founded the Charles University, which is the oldest university in Central Europe.
The most important event in the recent history that occurred in Prague was the Velvet
Revolution in 1989. During the Velvet Revolution the communism in the Czech Republic has
collapsed. In 1993 the Czechoslovakia split up and Prague became the capital of the Czech Republic. Some buildings and the underground transport system were damaged during floods in 2002.
Prague is full of outstanding historical monuments. Number one is Prague Castle. It was a residence of Czech kings and is now a seat of the president. The most impressive building is
