Geography
Australia is situated in the southern hemisphere.
The smallest continent on the Earth.
Its area is about 7,7 million sq km and it has about 19,7 million inhabitants.
The most important mountain range is the Great Dividing Range on the eastern coast (part of it is called the Australian Alps, where there is the highest point of Australia . Mt.Kosciusko, 2229 m).
The most important river is the Murray River with its tributaries the Darling River and the Lachlan River, which all spring in the Great Dividing Range.
three important lakes in the country : Lake Eyre, Lake Torrens and Lake Gairdner. There are also a lot of Intermittent streams.
Climate
The climate of Australia is mainly subtropical (temperatures in summer are more than 30°C), in the north it is tropical and in the south and in Tasmania it is mild. The central parts of Australia are very dry.
More than half of the country gets too little rain for any agriculture except sheep farming.
There are also several deserts in Australia – Great Victoria Desert, Gibson Desert, Great Sandy Desert, Simpson Desert and others.
Near the coast there are many islands (and atolls), the biggest ones are New Guinea (but it isn’t a part of Australia) and Tasmania.
there are many endemic species in Australia (kangaroo, koala, wombat, Tasmanian devil – all of them being so called marsupials (vacnatci); echidna, spiny anteater, platypus – egg laying mammals).
The Great Barrier Reef along the eastern coast off Queensland is the longest and most complex living coral system in the world and provides a habitat for a wide range of marine animals.
History
The first recorded sighting of Australia by Europeans was in 1606 (Willem Jansz), later a Spanish ship with Luis Vaez De Torres sailed to north of Cape York. In 1642 Abel Tasman explored the island in the south, later named Tasmania.
The wave of immigration from Europe started in 1788 after Captain James Cook had claimed New South Wales a British colony in 1770. Colonies stepwise separated – after the New South Wales they were Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland. At first convicts were taken to Australia. The convict system lasted till 1866, when it was officially abolished in the last colony in Australia – in Western Australia. After 1851, when gold was found in Australia, the population greatly increased.
Australia also wanted independence and this idea was solved on Jan. 1, 1901 when Queen Victoria proclaimed the Commonwealth of Australia.
State and Political System
The official name of the state is the Commonwealth of Australia
it is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations (before 1947 it was a “British dominion“).
It is the federation of 6 states: Western Australia (capital Perth), South Australia (Adelaid
