American history doesn’t start with the Vikings in the 10th century or with Christopher Columbus in 1492 but with people who fought for their self-government. But we should mention the first Europeans who came to the New World to settle there.
Some hoped to find new trade routes to Asia, priests came to bring the Christian religion to the Indians, some came to find gold and silver, and finally there were those who came because of new freedom and new way of life.
They started to form colonies and the colonies stretched along the Atlantic coastline. Life was different in each English colony.
Settlers in the northern colonies found the soil rocky and not very rich and so they did trapping, lumbering (cutting trees for wood), and fishing.
The settlers in the middle colonies were mostly farmers and cultivated wheat and other grains.
The southern colonies produced rice, tobacco and hemp, which were used to make rope.
The most famous group seeking freedom was Pilgrims. They left England because of their religion beliefs - pure Catholicism. They sailed on the Mayflower ship and arrived in America in winter 1620. They wanted to thank to God for surviving and especially for the first harvest in the New World and they hold a ceremony at harvest time called Thanksgiving Day. Now it is a national holiday.
Years passed and the colonies became economically strong while Britain spent a lot of money in wars. The British badly needed money and placed more and more taxes on various goods. And the taxes were the primary cause of the revolution. In 1773 another tax on tea was passed and a number of the colonists disguised as Indians threw the cargo of tea into the sea. The incident was called "the Boston Tea Party".
The British sent troops to America to suppress the uprising but in 1775 they were defeated by George Washington, a commander of the colonial army, later the first president.
