American festivals and traditions
There are no national holidays in the USA since each state has the federal PUBLIC holidays. It is important to know that the Americans are not only descendants of the British immigrants, there are many ethnic groups. These groups have brought their own customs and traditions which may be quite originally connected with religion feasts, such as Christmas and Eastern.
Lincoln’s birthday-(12.2.) some states celebrate it instead of the Presidents Day; It is a public holidays in all the states associated with Abraham Lincoln who saved the Union; he was 16th President if the USA; he became the symbol of the American dream; the boy who lacking wealth and influence won the highest office in the country;
Washington’s birthday – (22.2.) the 1st president of the USA-> his birthday is a real holiday in every state of the Union and is commemorated by public ceremonies;
The president’s day-(3rd Mon. in Feb.) O this day all presidents of the USA are honoured
Easter – is not a nat. holiday; most American spend Eastern Sunday with the family; many people give children dyed eggs and sweets; in some families they organize an egg hunt- children look for eggs which the adults hid somewhere in the house, yard or garden
-there is a traditional E. Egg Roll in front of the White House in Washington on E. Monday
Memorial Day- 30.5.- in most states; it came into being after the end of the Civil War; it is a day to honour the memory of those who have given their lives for their country;
-flowers and flags are placed on the graves of the war dead in cemeteries in the USA, Europe and the Pacific, and there is a ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Nat. Cemetery in Washington DC
- It also marks the beginning of the summer season
Independence Day – 4.7.- It commemorates the day in 1776 when the 13 Colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence and established the USA. On that day the Liberty Bell called the people of Philadelphia to the State House to hear the Declaration of Independence read out.
- Nowadays each city and town now has its own ceremony: parades, concerts, speeches by public official, and fireworks displays in the evening
Labor Day- 1st MO in April- is the working man’s holiday; it was 1st celebrated in 1882 by a parade in NY City. About 20 000 workers marched up Broadway with banners for 8 hours of work, rest, recreation
-The idea of Labor Day spread very quickly and in 1894 Congress made it a national holiday. Now: there are no more parades and it server as a long weekend between the 4.7. and Thanksgiving; people go for an outing;
