It consists of two large islands (Great Britain and Ireland). The United Kingdom is made up of England (London capital), Scotland (Edinburgh), Wales (Cardiff) and Northern Ireland (Belfast). Its neighbours are Ireland to west and France, which is only 35 km to the southeast across the English Channel.Mountains, highlands, lowlands:England is mostly rolling land. The main mountain regions here are the Cornish Heights (south-west England), the Cambrians (Wales), the Cumbrian Mountains (in the Lake District), the Pennines (the Backbone of England). The Cheviot Hills are on the border between England and Scotland. The Highlands of Scotland are the highest mountains in Britain with the highest mountain Ben Nevis. The eastern and southern parts of England are lower and high ground is referred to as hills, downs or heights (The Chiltern Hills, The South Downs and the East Anglican Heights).Rivers:The longest rivers are the Severn and the Thames. The Thames flows threw the capital London into the North Sea. The Severn flows into the Bristol Channel.Climate:The weather is variability is due to the temperate maritime climate. Population:Today there are over 60 million inhabitants in the UK of which 7 million live in the capital city London. In Britain we can find the following ethnic groups: English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Ulster…Languages:The majority of people speak English. There are minority languages which are of Celtic origin: Welsh, Scottish and Irish Gaelic. National economy:The United Kingdom is one of the largest economies in the European Union with energy-rich reserves of gas and oil under the NorthSea. Britain’s natural riches are mainly coal, tin, oil, gas, limestone, iron, salt, clay, chalk and lead.The main industries are steel, metals, vehicles, shipbuilding, shipping, banking, insurance, textiles, chemicals, electronics, aircraft, machinery, distilling.About 30 percent of land is arable and the main agricultural products are grain, sugar beet, fruit, vegetables.Worldknown British cattle and sheep breeding earn lots of money.Government type and administration:Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy with the Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state. Constitutional monarchy means that the head of state is Queen but she can act only on the advice of her ministers.History:Britain was part of the continent of Europe until about 6000 BC.After several centuries, the English finally took control of their neighbours.
